press release: 250 GlashĂĽtte watches for Doctors Without Borders Germany

NOMOS Glashütte is releasing another new limited special-edition in support of emergency aid—for the first time with its automatic model Tangomat

GLASHÜTTE, OCTOBER 2019. A red twelve on the otherwise straightforward dial—the latest NOMOS model for Doctors Without Borders (MSF) also bears this unmistakable symbol that has come to be associated with watches that help provide aid. The cooperation between watchmaking company NOMOS Glashütte and this Nobel Prize-winning organization began in 2012. Tangomat für Ärzte ohne Grenzen Deutschland is the eleventh model that NOMOS Glashütte has produced in support of emergency aid. An imposing watch with a 38-millimeter diameter, it is also a classic model from the watchmaking company. Ticking within is the in-house built automatic caliber DUW 5001, while the metal bracelet wears with the utmost comfort and rounds off the robust appeal of this timepiece.

250 euros from each sale goes directly to Ärzte ohne Grenzen (the section of MSF in Germany). This is how a single watch can support the treatment of 1,470 children against malaria, secure enough anesthesia for ten operations, or provide 450 people with three months’ worth of vital medicine. Despite its fine metal bracelet, and even though it is a limited edition, this version of Tangomat is available for exactly the same price as the standard model, which comes with a leather strap.

So, better times for NOMOS wearers and for people who are in need: “When it comes to brand cooperations, it is very important for Doctors Without Borders that certain principles and values are mutual. The cooperation with NOMOS Glashütte is regarded with conviction by both sides,” says Florian Westphal, General Director for MSF Germany: “Together, NOMOS Glashütte and Doctors Without Borders are saving lives.

This special-edition model, limited to 250 watches, is now available at select retailers across Europe.

press release: A classic in color: Tetra plum

GLASHÜTTE, OCTOBER 2019. Introducing a brand-new timepiece from NOMOS Glashütte that is not afraid to make a statement: Tetra plum. It features a rich purple dial that pays tribute to nature’s bounty. After blossoming in springtime and ripening over a long, hot summer, by early fall the harvest is ready to be enjoyed—apples and apricots, cherries, peaches, pears, and, of course, plums. This appealing timepiece looks good enough to eat, with silver accents on the numerals, indexes, and hands adding a sophisticated touch.

Measuring 29.5 by 29.5 millimeters, Tetra plum has a character all of its own—and additional functionality. The eye-catching complication between twelve and one o’clock is a power reserve indicator, reminding the wearer when it is time to wind the watch. Tetra plum is powered by the hand-wound NOMOS caliber DUW 4301, which also features the NOMOS swing system—itself a fruit of many years of labor. This proprietary escapement is designed and developed in-house, which is an exceptional achievement in the watchmaking world. Having this technological capability allows NOMOS to ensure the quality of its calibers—and the reliability of its watches.

Tetra plum may be brand new, but the Tetra model from NOMOS Glashütte is a classic design. Known for its square case and angular typography, Tetra has been part of the NOMOS collection for over 25 years. It is incredibly thin for a mechanical watch, with lugs that are almost delicate—which is why they are doubled. The round sub-seconds dial adds a contrasting touch to the clean-cut corners found elsewhere in Tetra. The overall aesthetic is harmonious and modern, with a timeless elegance that suits a wide range of wrists. Tetra plum will be available at selected retailers from October.

press release: For its new Sport watches, NOMOS GlashĂĽtte uses the best materials on Earth.

Craftsmanship encased in a miniature stainless steel vault and extra-thick sapphire crystal glass: Club Sport. All the new Sport watches from NOMOS GlashĂĽtte are water resistant to 1000 ft.

Glashütte, May 2019. Stainless steel, sapphire crystal glass, brass, and rubies: The watchmaking company NOMOS Glashütte has always placed a great deal of importance on using the best materials. And the brand’s sporty new models with bracelets, Tangente Sport and Club Sport, feature more of them than ever. The steel and glass in the cases are around 20 percent thicker in these watches—and the seals inside are thicker too. These models are water resistant to 1000 ft, which means they perform exceptionally on land as well. Outstanding robustness was the aim of our product designers and material experts—without compromising on elegance, of course. Here is a short overview of the materials used to make these miniature vaults, which protect the fine Glashütte craftsmanship within so securely.

Only a diamond is harder: the sapphire crystal glass in Tangente Sport. It is around 20 percent thicker than in any other watch from the brand.

The dials and calibers of the new watches are protected by a thick layer of domed glass. More specifically: pure synthetic sapphire crystal glass, which has a hardness rating of nine out of ten on the Mohs scale, making it one of the hardest and most resilient materials in the world—as hard as sapphire, in fact. Made using the Verneuil (or flame-fusion) process, it is created by heating and subsequently crystallizing aluminum oxide (also called alumina). With an anti-reflective coating on both sides, this glass affords the best readability for the wearer and helps ensure that the watch can withstand great pressure.

The new watches are hermetically sealed—also thanks to their screw-down crown. When pulled out in Club Sport, the red hazard ring is revealed on the crown stem, which alerts the wearer to the fact that it is not screwed in fully.

The cases and bracelets of the new NOMOS Sport watches are made from surgical steel: type 316L stainless steel, to be exact. This means they are extremely long-lasting and resilient—and, of course, corrosion-resistant. Also used in surgical instruments, there are practically no known allergies to this material—which is important, since the watch is worn directly next to the skin.

The new NOMOS Sport bracelet is robust, long-lasting—and fits every wrist, as the individual links can easily be added and removed.

The new stainless steel case was subject to a rigorous waterproofness test according to the “condensation principle.” The result? It withstands more than 30 bar, meaning it could easily take the weight of a thoroughbred Arabian horse in its stride. Flying over the handlebars of a mountain bike, a rocky landing while kitesurfing—no problem, at least for the watch!

An essential part that is all too rarely spoken about in the context of watches and their straps: the beautiful deployant clasp.

The handmade Sport bracelet mentioned above is a true work of art: Featuring interlocking tongue and groove connections between the links, all the elements fit together seamlessly. This resilient bracelet brings noticeably more weight to the wrist, yet is still extremely comfortable to wear. NOMOS GlashĂĽtte sent the Sport bracelet to Switzerland for a series of exacting tests, which it passed with flying colors. Massive forces were exerted on the bracelet and its new stainless steel clasp in tens of thousands of stress cycles. Conclusion: This GlashĂĽtte beauty is indestructible.

press release: small pleasures

NOMOS Glashütte presents duo: simple and elegant two-hand models with a prime caliber from Glashütte—watches for women that make wonderful gifts

GLASHÜTTE, MARCH 2019. Tangente, Orion, Ludwig, Tetra are the four classics that NOMOS Glashütte started with more than a quarter of a century ago. Now, there are new versions of these watches designed to embody the Bauhaus movement. Conceived for more delicate wrists, these models measure 33 millimeters in diameter (Tetra side length: 27 milli-meters). But this time they feature only two hands—hence “duo.” After all, sometimes it’s better to keep things simple. It goes without saying that these hand-wound watches contain a fine Glashütte caliber, meaning they are highly precise. Inside, Alpha.2 is at work: an adaptation of NOMOS’ most manufactured caliber.

The case of the four new watches is made of stainless steel, the dials are white silver-plated, as with other NOMOS classics. This silver case is complemented by golden hands, which makes this watch an ideal companion to jewelry. The mocha-brown typography is almost black, but softer, and the beige velour leather strap is also more delicate thanthe classic Shell Cordovan. A personalized engraving on the stainless steel back is the finishing touch—available on request.

R emoving the complication of the small seconds also means a reduction in price: Tangente, Ludwig, Tetra and Orion duo will make perfect presents, and are wonderful small pleasures from GlashĂĽtte. Available from April at Ace Jewelers.
